Frequently Asked Questions

1. Can I use downloaded content to create work for a client?

You are allowed to use Simplified Science Publishing Content for your own client's work as long as you are using the templates to create a secondary element that is a part of a unique image (see example below). You are not allowed to sell clients an exact copy/paste of the main elements.

You will need to modify and combine the original images so that they become a secondary element product for your client by adjusting the sizes, vector points, and color of the templates and also add your own graphics or drawings. This usually happens naturally when you are creating custom graphics that tell your client's unique scientific story. Learn more about secondary and main elements below.

When using Simplified Science Publishing Content, please note that you can edit it and give your client the printed product or the PNG/PDF file that contains the secondary elements, but never an editable file which includes our resources.

2. What is the difference between a secondary and main element?

When using Simplified Science Publishing Content for any use that generates profit, you must edit the original content in a way that changes it from a main element to a secondary element and you are not allowed to share the original editable files. If you are using the templates for your own scientific figures that are published in academic journals, posters or presentations, you are allowed to use the original files as main elements in your design.

Main Element (Example 1)

  • Content is used as main element when the resource is used in a product (physical or digital) as it has been downloaded from the Simplified Science Publishing sites, without any changes being applied to the design.

Main Element (Example 2)

  • If you add other elements created by yourself or by a third party, like small details or adding/changing the text and color, but the design from Simplified Science Publishing is still the element with more weight in the final composition, meaning that it attracts the attention before the other parts on the design, this will still be understood as main element.

Secondary Element

  • Simplified Science Publishing content is used as a secondary element when other elements, not from Simplified Science Publishing, are added to the final composition and become more important than the resource from Simplified Science Publishing.
  • Acceptable uses of secondary elements for commercial profit, such as freelance designs for a client.

3. What does it mean to use Simplified Science Publishing Content "without attribution"?

Without attribution means that you are allowed to use the content for personal, academic, educational, and commercial uses without referencing Simplified Science Publishing as the source of the images. This is different from BioRender where most licenses require that you acknowledge use of BioRender in publications.
